Placenta Encapsulation FAQ

When you are trying to decided which services you want to invest in, you may find that you have MANY questions. Selecting birth or postpartum services involves confidence and trust in the company you use.

COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
I have been fully trained in food safety and hold a NY – ServSafe Food Handler card. I have completed a blood borne pathogens training specifically designed for placenta encapsulation specialists which is OSHA certified. I am certified in handling bloodborne pathogens according to the OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.1030. This means superior client safety and rigorous standards are applied to every aspect of the process. You can rest easy, knowing that your placenta will be handled properly, safely and respectfully.

PROPER REFRIGERATION AND TRANSPORTATION PROTOCOLS
Proper refrigeration during storage and transportation is crucial as bacteria can colonize if not properly handled. I have the experience needed to safely transport your placenta for preparation and encapsulation.

I ONLY WORK ON ONE PLACENTA AT A TIME
Nothing is more important than your safety, so I only work on one placenta at a time, per location. If two clients give birth on the same day I complete the first placenta, fully disinfect and then begin the second placenta. Every client receives my full attention to detail and safety. I have chosen to limit the amount of client’s I accept each month, to ensure my availability. I also have several back up encapsulation specialists with similar skill & experience readily available. My service does not end when I deliver your capsules. I am available any time to consult and answer any questions you have regarding your placenta products.

PREPARATION AREA IS PROPERLY DISINFECTED
The entire preparation surface is thoroughly disinfected before and after with a bleach solution, the dilution of which exceeds OSHA protocols to prevent cross contamination. I also do a clean water rinse to remove bleach residue.

EQUIPMENT IS PROPERLY DISINFECTED
Because the equipment comes in contact with many clients, it is imperative that it be properly disinfected every single use in order to prevent cross contamination. My protocol requires everything be washed in hot soapy water, rinsed, then fully immersed in a 10% bleach solution for 20 minutes, followed by a final clean water rinse to remove bleach residue. This is the standard required by OSHA & the EPA for disinfection and is designed to kill STIs and blood borne pathogens. I also replace equipment yearly and use disposable products when possible. You also have the option for me to prepare your placenta using your own equipment.

WHAT IS PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION?
First, we examine your placenta and wash off any residual blood.

Depending on your preparation preference, the placenta is either very thinly sliced, or gently steamed and then thinly sliced.
These slices go into a food grade dehydrator until the internal temperature reaches 160° F for about 8-10 hours.
It is then ground up into a fine powder and put into capsule form using an encapsulating device.
Your capsules are packaged in dark glass or PET plastic jars to protect the quality and potency.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RAW METHOD AND BASIC HEATED?
The raw foods method of preparation skips the heating process before dehydration.

Your placenta is only washed and sliced. This gives you more potent capsules and a higher yield.
The heated method gently warms the placenta. The placenta is sliced and dehydrated.
Basic Heated method aligns with the belief that the postpartum body needs warmth to adequately heal from birth, replenish and move fluids and remove obstructions.
Both have incredible benefits!

CAN I ENCAPSULATE MY PLACENTA IF I HAVE A C-SECTION?
Absolutely!
Just make sure you let your care provider and hospital know that you plan to take your placenta home with you.
They will place it in a small, plastic container labeled with your information.

HOW DO I STORE MY PLACENTA UNTIL IT CAN BE PREPARED?
At your prenatal visit your encapsulator will give you a small styrofoam cooler with a utility grade thermometer inside.
Bring this with you when you give birth.
Your placenta container can be placed inside the cooler surrounded by ice.
Stick the thermometer in the ice next to the container and ensure it stays between 30-40° F until it can transported to your home and prepared.
You can obtain ice from the staff where you birth.

HOW DO I KNOW MY PLACENTA IS BEING PREPARED CORRECTLY?
The Sacred Health Doula is run by someone who was trained by an internationally known & respected placenta specialist.
Maritday is very familiar with following food handling safety.
OSHA protocol for working with blood borne pathogens are always followed.
Preparation in your home ensures that you are receiving your OWN placenta.

WHAT IS A PLACENTA TINCTURE?
Placenta tincture is a piece of raw or powdered placenta that is infused in high proof alcohol.

The alcohol draws all of the nutrients and hormonal compounds from the placenta.
This extraction process creates a powerful tincture that is preserved for longer periods of time.
