Baby, Breasts & You – Common concerns in the first 7 days

Here are some common breastfeeding issues that can occur in the first few days of life with your baby. They are correctable with early support and education from a certified lactation counselor.

Improper Latch – It is painful and can lead to inadequate feeding, low weight gain, insufficient or over-abundant milk, early weaning, and sore or cracked nipples.

Dehydration – Infants require adequate fluid and nutrient intake in order to avoid compromising their normal physiology and growth. Infants are at risk of dehydration due to their large surface area in relation to weight and rely on caregivers to ensure adequate fluid intake.

Weight Loss – It is normal for term infants to loose up to 7% of their birth weight before regaining it by day 10. Though not equivalent to “10% dehydration”, 10% of birth weight loss warrants attention. For a near-term baby, measures should be taken earlier

Jaundice – caused by too much bilirubin in the blood – which are the two most common causes of newborn hospital readmission. Mothers sometimes believe this weight loss means their baby is not getting enough breast milk, leading them to supplement with formula.

These can happen if your baby is not breastfeeding well. If your baby is unresponsive, confused and/or clearly hungry, you will be worried because every little problem is magnified under a lens of uncertainty.

It’s easier to address breastfeeding issues sooner vs later because you and your little haven’t learned any bad habits. If your baby is sleepy or has a latch problem, your breasts don’t get stimulated to make milk in a timely fashion. Your baby knows how to breastfeed. Most people including medical professionals don’t understand how breastfeeding works, often describing the “worst case scenario.”

Breastfeeding can be challenging, requiring time encouragement and patience.
